Central Elementary School will participate in NEA's Read Across America during the week of February 27th-March 03rd.  Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 02, 2017 the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.  Please come and join us at CES and make this a reading adventure that our students will never forget!

Dr. Seuss Week: Join in the week long celebration!

Central Elementary School “CUBS” will celebrate “Read Across America Week on February 27, 2017 through March 3, 2017. Dr. Seuss will be 113 years old this year!  The students will enjoy a variety of engaging and interactive literacy based activities.  Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!  All students, staff and parents are encouraged to participate in Read Across America Week activities honoring Dr. Seuss and literacy.

Monday, February 27th- "Free to Read Monday" The students will wear Red/White/Blue to celebrate the freedom to read what one wants and make hats (Dr. Seuss) to wear each day.  Guest Readers and Central High School students will read to the students today at CES from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  From 12:00 to 2:30 p.m. the students will take a virtual field Trip within their rooms to (www.seusville.com).  After the completion of this field trip, all students will work in small groups, select and read books or short stories by Dr. Seuss. Each group then prepares critical thinking questions and lead class discussions about the issues raised in the story. Students will utilize the Interactive Literary Element Maps provided to explore the conflict in their selected texts."

Tuesday, February 28th- "Cheering for Reading Tuesday" The students will wear shirts/jerseys to support their favorite team for reading!  From 8:30 a.m. -9:45 a.m. the activities will include grades K-1 listening to the story “Green Eggs and Ham” within their classrooms by Dr. Seuss and creating memories by connecting the literature through cooking up a batch of their own green eggs to try. Grades 2-5 will engage in reading a Dr. Seuss book and constructing a special Dr. Seuss inspired Breakfast Snack (“Cat in the Hat” Parfait) within their classrooms and afterwards they will enjoy the end results. At (12:30-2:00 p.m.) the students in grades 3-5 will visit classrooms (Teachers Choice) and read a Dr. Seuss Book aloud to students in grades k-2.  All CES administrators and specialists will read Dr. Seuss Books to as many classes as possible during this time as well.

Wednesday-“Readers in Training Day Wednesday” Wear your favorite exercise wear/Jogging wear for reading and have the students engage in Reading Fitness Center activities within the gym inspired by the Dr. Seuss books. Activities will start within the mini gym at 8:30 a.m.  Today, Reading Fitness Centers will be displayed in the gym and every Center will include a Dr. Seuss’s book in which every teacher will read aloud to his or her students. After the completion of the read alouds, the fitness fun and games will began with an activity that involves the story read.  After leaving he gym, the students will sing “Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss” in honor of Dr. Seuss’s Day.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS!!!

*K-5 Gym Schedule Time: Grade 5 (8:30-9:30 am), Grade 4 (9:30-10:30 am), Grade 3 (10:30-11:30 am), Grade k (11:30-12:30 pm), Grade 1 (12:30-1:30 pm), Grade 2 (1:30-2:30 pm).  All specialists will be needed to make this activity a success. No gym shorts or sandals should be worn today!

Thursday- “Oh, the Places You'll Go Thursday!”  The students will wear a shirt from a vacation (a shirt with the name of a place) and view a Dr. Seuss’s movie with popcorn in the mini gym.  *Schedule-9:00-10:30 a.m. (Grades K-2) & 12:30 -2:00 p.m. (Grades 3-5). 

Friday- “Dr. Seuss & African American History Integration Friday”- From 9:00 a.m. – 1:45 p.m. Central Elementary’s Wax Museum brings African American History to life in conjunction with Dr. Seuss’s birthday celebration.  As you walk the corridors during the African American wax display, you will notice Dr. Theodor Geisel (Author of Dr. Seuss’s Books) displayed in room 114 providing rich history of the man known as the “Cat In The Hat”.  Within this historical wax room, there will be a table displaying African American and Dr. Seuss’ books. All parents, visitors and guest will be asked to choose a book of choice and read to the students within the classrooms at Central Elementary School. 

Note: CES cafeteria staff will serve green eggs and ham and a Dr. Seuss’s Birthday cake this week for the “CUBS”, so keep your eyes open for extra treats from the cubs den cafe.
